Protecting Mountain Gorillas and Virunga

Robert from Rumangabo

About Me

2 Oct 2008

I came to Congo nearly 5 years ago to help re-establish the presence of the Frankfurt Zoological Society in Virunga following the war that not only killed over 5 million people but also decimated the park.

I have an undergraduate degree in Anthrolopogy and Ecology and a Master’s degree in Conservation Biology from DICE. Before coming here I worked in Thailand, Panama and Madagascar.

With Conrad Aveling, a former FZS project chief, in front of the Mikeno volcano in Virunga

The Rangers face enormous challenges in the park, from preventing poaching and illegal park invasions to protecting wildlife from armed groups, and it is a privilege to be working with them.
